Rochford hails dredging ruling

January 29th, 2010
Frank Gerace, WDEL

The president of the Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay hails a federal judge's decision allowing deepening of part of the Delaware River shipping channel.

Dennis Rochford says the Army Corps of Engineers, which will do the dredging, is willing to work with state officials to make sure the project is environmentally friendly.

Judge Sue Robinson Wednesday denied a request by DNREC to block the Corps from deepening the channel by 5 feet from the Pennsylvania/Delaware state line to the C and D Canal.

Delaware and New Jersey say the Corps needs a permit to deepen the channel, a claim the Corps disputes based on its responsibility to maintain clear navigation.
