(from The News Journal) -- I encourage the state of Delaware and Army Corp of Engineers to continue efforts to deepen the shipping channel in the Delaware River and Bay.

The current lack of depth in our Delaware waterways places us at a severe disadvantage, compared to other world ports, especially at a time when the super tankers are the stars of the fleet. We have world class ports along the Delaware River; just lack the ability to access them.

Wilmington, Philadelphia, and New Jersey have always enjoyed the benefit of the Delaware River as a worldwide accessible shipping lane, yet we a steadily losing that advantage to larger cargo ships, more competitive world wide ports, and a rapidly advancing worldwide economy.

This is not simply a matter of maritime importantance or dock workers jobs; this is truly about sustaining a regional economy that far extends beyond the geographic boundaries. Banking industries, investment firms, cargo carriers and warehouse commercial real estate are simply a few examples of segments of our economy that reap the benefits and gains of a free and open market

I realize there is sensitivity to environmental concerns however; these issues can be mitigated with proper planning and the application environmental expertise.

This is not simply about jobs; it also includes a stabilized economy, and a world class destination for generations to benefit from as our region competes with global competition.
