DOVER, Del. (AP) - The Army Corps of Engineers has awarded an option allowing a contractor to begin deepening the Delaware River shipping channel.
Tuesday's agreement allows Norfolk Dredging Co. to begin deepening a portion of the river in Delaware by five feet. But officials said no actual digging will take place before Friday, by which time the project sponsor expects to complete the purchase of required environmental credits.
There is also a chance that a federal appeals court could block the dredging while it hears a challenge from environmental groups to a judge's refusal to stop the deepening.
Supporters say the dredging will keep local ports competitive, but opponents argue it will have limited economic benefits and stir up toxic sediments that could harm water quality and wildlife.
